Jon Jones vs. Alex Pereira: Mega-Fight Expected in 2026, Says UFC Insider

A blockbuster showdown between Jon Jones and Alex Pereira could headline 2026. Both fighters appear eager to face each other, and MMA analyst Chael Sonnen believes the bout is inevitable. Sonnen shared his insights during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, sparking excitement among fans.

Sonnen predicts 2026 showdown

Sonnen discussed the potential heavyweight clash and how it impacts the light heavyweight title picture, which Pereira currently dominates. “Pereira and Jones’ social media talk shows the fight is coming in 2026,” Sonnen said. “But Jon Jones is the only fighter who doesn’t seem to want it. He took three years off, drinking protein shakes and sitting out under suspension.”

Sonnen criticized Jones for hesitating about his future. “He jumped back in the pool but can’t decide what to do,” he added. “If Jon thinks Pereira will wait and do nothing at age 38, that’s not solving anything. Jon could call out Pereira and fight him in February or March, then move on to other things.”

Sonnen believes the situation needs clarity. “Instead, Pereira is signaling a move to heavyweight, and we need to pay attention. If Pereira stays there, the light heavyweight belt should be vacated so the division can move forward.”

Jones mocks Aspinall after UFC 321

Jon Jones couldn’t resist taking a jab at heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall following UFC 321. Aspinall’s title defense against Ciryl Gane ended in a no contest after an accidental eye poke, leaving fans frustrated. The debate over a Jones-Aspinall title unification had long dominated headlines before Jones retired and vacated his belt, allowing Aspinall to become the undisputed champion.

After the anticlimactic finish in Abu Dhabi, Jones mocked the incident on social media. He changed his profile picture from a duck to one wearing an eye patch—a not-so-subtle dig at Aspinall. He also shared a fan post comparing his quick win over Gane to the brief duration of the Aspinall-Gane fight. Over the image, Jones wrote, “Never forget who the GOAT is.”

Jones’ quick win still resonates

Jones’ victory over Ciryl Gane remains one of his defining moments. He defeated Gane in just over two minutes to claim the vacant heavyweight title in 2023. By contrast, the Aspinall-Gane fight ended after four and a half minutes due to the unfortunate eye poke. Jones’ reminder of that dominant performance sent a clear message: he still considers himself the greatest fighter of all time.
