Ilia Topuria ends feud with Paddy Pimblett ahead of long-awaited showdown

Ilia Topuria has signalled an end to his long-running personal feud with Paddy Pimblett, saying their rivalry has evolved into a purely professional one as the pair move closer to a likely clash in 2026.

The UFC lightweight champion famously clashed with Pimblett in a hotel confrontation three years ago, sparking a bitter war of words that played out across interviews, press conferences and social media. But Topuria says Pimblett’s recent show of support has shifted his perspective.

With Topuria taking a break from MMA to deal with family matters, Pimblett has been booked to face Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title at UFC 324 in January. Rather than criticising his rival, Pimblett publicly wished Topuria well – a gesture that appears to have drawn a line under their hostility.

“He’s always looked like a very entertaining guy who’s done a great job,” Topuria told ESPN Deportes. “He made a mistake with a tweet about Georgia, but we all learn from our mistakes. Deep down, I see someone who understands family and personal problems and respects them.”

Topuria added that whatever happens next will be settled in the cage. “What will happen in the octagon excites everyone. At the end of the day, we’re professionals, and it will be a professional fight.”

Away from the rivalry, the 28-year-old also confirmed he still plans to pursue a boxing career once his MMA journey is complete. Speaking to Marca, Topuria said he wants to finish his story in the UFC before making a full transition, insisting he would not juggle both sports at the same time.

“When I’m done in MMA, I don’t think it will take me long to move into boxing,” he said. “And I’m going to surprise more than one person.”
