Exhibition Fight Ends in Chaos

After his exhibition boxing bout against former champion Acelino “Popó” Freitas, MMA veteran Wanderlei Silva was injured during a chaotic postfight confrontation. The match concluded in the fourth round when Silva was disqualified for multiple head-butts. Tensions flared immediately afterward as members of both camps entered the ring, sparking a heated clash that quickly escalated into physical violence.

Veteran Fighter Injured in Melee

Amid the confrontation, Silva was struck in the face, reportedly by Rafael Freitas, leaving him unconscious and with a fractured nose. Medical personnel treated Silva promptly for his facial injuries, and he later reported pain and swelling around his eye, prompting further medical examinations.

Disciplinary Measures and Future Implications

The Brazilian National Boxing Council has issued sanctions following the incident. Silva and Freitas each received a 180-day suspension from sanctioned competitions, while Silva’s coach was handed a 365-day ban. The melee has raised concerns about security and athlete safety at combat events, and Silva’s team has announced plans to pursue legal action over the assault.
