Featherweight champion dominates rematch
Alexander Volkanovski believes Diego Lopes never had a real chance against him. At UFC 325, Volkanovski defended his featherweight belt, repeating his victory from their first encounter last year.
Lopes aimed to avenge his previous loss, but fans questioned his readiness. Even with noticeable improvements, he faced a tough challenge in Sydney earlier this month.
Stylistic matchup worked against Lopes
Volkanovski thinks Lopes may have missed his final chance at the 145-pound title. Lopes admitted UFC 325 could be his last opportunity against an opponent who had already beaten him.
On the MightyCast, Volkanovski told Demetrious Johnson the matchup always favored him.
“I feel bad because I’m probably the worst possible matchup for him,” Volkanovski said. “My fight IQ and footwork made it impossible for him to cope.”
He added the short turnaround made the task even harder. “He essentially wasted his shot. I could go 50 minutes while he struggled to adapt.”
Rematch timing and strategy hurt Lopes
Volkanovski argued that the quick rematch less than a year after their first fight disadvantaged Lopes. The Brazilian failed to cut off the Octagon both times, a key skill he needed to improve.
“It looked like he was told to be patient and use his jab, but he had no real plan,” Volkanovski said. “He claims growth, but I didn’t see it. His first fight performance was better.”
Stats confirm Volkanovski’s control
Volkanovski excels at output and distance management, controlling fights effectively. In their first bout, he outlanded Lopes 158 significant strikes to 63.
In UFC 325, Lopes landed the fight’s biggest strike, dropping Volkanovski in round three. Stats suggest slight improvement: Lopes was outlanded 98 to 70.
Still, Lopes only won two of 15 rounds on the judges’ cards. Even in a closer fight, Volkanovski proved he has Lopes’ number.
