Sean Strickland made the 185-pound limit for UFC Houston after a punishing weight cut. He admitted the process tested him more than the fight itself.
The former middleweight champion has been inactive for over a year after suffering a broken nose against Dricus Du Plessis in their February title rematch. During his time off, Strickland’s weight climbed past 230 pounds, forcing him to endure an intense effort to return to welterweight.
He not only made weight but hit the championship limit exactly, signaling his intent to remain a top contender. His opponent, Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez, reached the extended 186-pound limit to make the fight official.
Fighters Face the Scales in UFC Houston
At the morning weigh-ins, both main event fighters stepped on the scales first. Strickland hit 185 pounds precisely. Hernandez used the extra pound and weighed in at 186 pounds.
Strickland shared video footage of his weight cut, admitting he found it harder than the fight itself. Back in May, a video with reporter Helen Yee showed him over 230 pounds. He has not competed since.
Gruelling Workouts and Heart-Pumping Effort
Strickland posted proof of a two-hour, 1,214-calorie workout, showing his heart rate rising from 38 bpm at rest to 141 bpm at peak.
He told fans: “This is what we really get paid to do. Cutting weight is worse than the fight, but we are almost there.” His posts highlighted both the mental and physical strain of reaching championship weight.
Strickland’s determination shows he will return to the octagon ready to prove himself among the division’s elite once again.
