Lerone Murphy Says UFC 325 Title Decision Made Him ‘Fall Out of Love’ With MMA

Lerone Murphy has admitted that he briefly lost passion for MMA after learning that Diego Lopes, rather than himself or fellow contender Movsar Evloev, would challenge for the featherweight title at UFC 325.

Murphy, ranked fourth and still undefeated, appeared to be in prime position for a title shot after knocking out Aaron Pico at UFC 319. Lopes, by contrast, fought for the vacant belt less than a year ago and lost, earning only one win since—making the UFC’s decision a shock to many fans and fighters.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani on The Uncrowned, Murphy said the announcement deeply affected him.
“When I first found out, I fell out of love with it for a bit,” he admitted. “I got into MMA over boxing because I thought there were no politics … the best fight the best. That’s what hurt me the most.”

Despite his disappointment, Murphy insists he plans to stay focused and keep climbing. He believes a title shot will come with continued wins.
“It’s business. Just keep fighting, keep doing what you’re doing, and we’ll get there eventually,” he said. “I think it’s inevitable — I’m going to be champion. My road’s never been easy from the get-go.”
