Joe Rogan Criticizes Dana White’s CM Punk Decision as Mismatched Fight

Rogan reflects on UFC beginnings

Joe Rogan initially turned down Dana White’s offer to commentate for the UFC. At the time, he doubted the promotion’s financial stability. Both men later became key figures in mixed martial arts, but they often disagreed on major decisions. Rogan frequently pushed for reforms that White resisted, arguing they would benefit both athletes and fans. The stand-up comedian and podcaster also openly criticized a fight the UFC scheduled, sparking widespread debate in the MMA community.

Shock over CM Punk’s UFC debut

Rogan voiced strong concerns about CM Punk fighting Mickey Gall. The match occurred during UFC 203 in September 2016, the same night Alistair Overeem faced Stipe Miocic and received boos after losing. Punk, born Phil Brooks, entered the octagon for his first MMA fight and lost to Gall in the opening round. Rogan questioned the decision to book the bout, both before and after the event.

“I was like, who said yes to this?” Rogan said on JRE MMA Show #31. “Why would you agree to this? This guarantees brain damage. You have no chance of winning.”

Comparing fighters like pitbulls and puppies

Rogan received backlash from Punk’s fans for predicting his loss, but he defended his perspective. “I understand what I’m talking about,” Rogan explained. “It’s like putting a pitbull in a cage with a puppy. What do you think will happen? The pitbull will destroy the puppy. That’s how it works.”

Fans share Rogan’s concerns

Many fans, along with Rogan, expected CM Punk to lose his debut. Their main issue, however, was not Punk’s ability but the opportunity he received. Dana White called the fight Punk’s “dream,” elevating him on the card and giving him more attention than far more experienced fighters. Rogan criticized this approach while analyzing the matchup on his podcast.

“I don’t like that fight being on PPV,” Rogan said. “I get that PPV sales matter, but UFC PPV should feature elite fighters. Curtis Blaydes vs. Alistair Overeem should have been the headliner, not what we got to see.”
