Historic Membership Approval
The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) has officially become a full member of the International Boxing Association (IBA), the sport’s global governing body. The decision was approved at an IBA board meeting on 6 February and formally communicated to the IABF through a letter from Lausanne, Switzerland, on 9 February.
IBA President Umar Kremlev praised the federation’s commitment to boxing, transparent governance, and adherence to international standards, calling the membership a “well-deserved” achievement.
Opportunities for Indian Boxers
Full IBA membership allows Indian boxers to compete in international tournaments and events organised by the association. IABF President Rakesh Mishra described the recognition as a “significant opportunity” that will provide athletes with better access to global competitions, training support, and exposure on the world stage.
Focus on Growth and Development
IABF Secretary General Rakesh Thakran thanked the IBA board and member nations for their support, highlighting that the decision aligns with India’s vision to expand Olympic opportunities for athletes. Thakran confirmed that the federation will prioritize grassroots talent identification and structured training programmes to prepare Indian boxers for future Olympic Games while addressing ongoing challenges in the sport.
