Former boxing champion George Groves shared strong opinions about Jake Paul, Netflix’s boxing documentary, and the BBC’s return to the sport.
Groves Claims Jake Paul Copies Others
In a recent interview with Poker Strategy, Groves criticized Jake Paul for borrowing heavily from other fighters’ styles.
He discussed observing Paul during interactions with Gervonta Davis. Groves said,
“I like the clips where Gervonta Davis is standing there, and then Jake Paul’s doing the MMA stuff. Everything about him, he’s just seen on TV or somewhere else. It’s all stolen!”
Groves suggested Paul imitates moves rather than creating his own style. He emphasized that Paul’s mannerisms feel copied rather than authentic.
Thoughts on Netflix Boxing Projects
Groves also addressed the Netflix documentary “The Greatest Showmen,” which covers Matchroom Boxing and the Hearns family.
“I came in halfway through the third episode. I like the title because Eddie and Barry are showmen. But if you watch the movie with Hugh Jackman, it’s a bit of a con. It’s quite deceptive.”
Groves highlighted moments where reality appeared altered for drama. He gave the example of Conor Benn, who calls while Eddie and Frank Smith are golfing. Groves joked about Benn’s Versace dressing gown, questioning whether he bought it before claiming financial struggles.
BBC Revives the Sweet Science
Groves expressed excitement over boxing’s return to the BBC. He said the exposure can help nurture new talent in the sport.
“This is awesome. I can’t believe that it’s on BBC 2, which I think is great. I don’t know the setup, but it’s a good fight and it’s on terrestrial. I’m very excited.”
He praised promoter Ben Shalom and his stable of fighters, noting their potential to become future stars. Groves hoped the BBC broadcasts could balance costs while showcasing emerging talent.
