Ryan Garcia rejected a $20 million fight with Jake Paul to pursue a world title bout against Mario Barrios.
Garcia has not fought since losing to Rolando Romero in May. Paul, who last defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June, planned to fight Gervonta Davis, but Davis faced legal issues, cancelling the bout. Paul then called out stars including Terence Crawford, Francis Ngannou, and Garcia.
Garcia told Covers he refused Paul because the matchup was dangerous: Paul weighs 220 pounds, and Garcia wanted a proper fight under fair conditions. He left the door open for a future showdown but prioritised legitimate boxing opportunities.
Upcoming Barrios Clash and Career Plans
Garcia confirmed he will face Mario Barrios for the WBC championship on February 21, although the venue remains unannounced.
The 27-year-old also seeks revenge against Romero in 2026 and aims to unify titles afterward. He reports his hand injury has healed, improving his performance and training. Garcia emphasises he lost to Romero due to circumstances, not lack of skill.
He remains confident and hungry for victories, focusing on career milestones before considering a Paul matchup.
Paul Shifts Focus to Joshua
Jake Paul confirmed he will fight Anthony Joshua on December 19 in Miami over eight three-minute rounds.
The fight will air live on Netflix, with ring walks expected around 11 pm local time, or 4 am in the UK. The timing may change depending on the undercard’s length.
