John Roby knows how crucial it is to rise after being knocked down in the ring and in life.
The Fort Dodge native says bouncing back after a tough hit proves as important outside boxing as inside it.
Message of Perseverance
Roby urges young people: “Don’t give up. Keep moving. Stay positive.”
He emphasizes that persistence defines champions, both in sports and everyday life.
Career Lessons
Roby held the International Boxing Organization’s super featherweight title from 1993 to 1994.
He credits his ability to keep rising, despite setbacks, as the foundation of his success.
Mentoring Youth
Roby has shared his message with Iowa youths for years and is now expanding to Michigan.
On Sept. 19 and 20, he will visit Grand Rapids to work with the community and speak at the Boys Club.
He will also sign copies of his book, The Belt of Wisdom, at two events.
Michigan Connection
Roby first connected with Michigan residents eight years ago and has made five previous visits.
His message on each trip remains consistent: “Keep getting up, keep trying. That alone makes you a champion.”
Inspiration from Family
Roby credits his mother, Juanita Mosley Roby, for inspiring his determination.
He said, “She made me a world champion. She never stopped believing in me.”
