Alex Pereira showed weaknesses in his first fight against Magomed Ankalaev, weaknesses he can correct in their upcoming rematch. Former UFC title challenger Dan Hardy shared this view during an interview with Helen Yee Sports at Xtreme Couture.
Lessons from UFC 313
At UFC 313 in March, Pereira lost his light heavyweight title to Ankalaev. The fight saw Ankalaev dominate and capture the 205-pound belt via unanimous decision. Hardy analyzed Pereira’s performance and said he may have given Ankalaev too much respect. “I think maybe Pereira had a little bit too much respect for Magomed Ankalaev in the last fight,” Hardy noted. He explained that Pereira’s close-range pressure usually overwhelms opponents, but he seemed hesitant and reactive against Ankalaev.
Adjusting the Strategy
Hardy believes Pereira can gain the upper hand by closing distance and pressing aggressively. He suggested using a Thai clinch to control exchanges and force Ankalaev into defensive positions. “It’s better if he’s pressuring forward and forcing Ankalaev to shoot under pressure,” Hardy added. Taking the initiative could limit Ankalaev’s offensive options and create openings for Pereira.
Glover Teixeira Weighs In
Pereira and Ankalaev will meet again at UFC 320 on October 4. Glover Teixeira, former UFC light heavyweight champion and Pereira’s longtime coach, offered his insight. Speaking on the Overdogs Brasil podcast with Renato Moicano and coach Marcos da Matta, Teixeira predicted a more dynamic fight. “The first round will be brutal. He’ll come in with an aggressive attitude. This fight will be much more dynamic,” Teixeira said, adding that Pereira will maintain pressure throughout.
Confidence and Readiness
Teixeira praised Pereira’s mental focus and preparation. “Mentally, some fighters are different. Poatan seems very confident and focused,” he said. Teixeira highlighted the importance of refining timing in the final three weeks of training. He concluded that Pereira is ready for a full five-round fight, combining physical readiness with strategic awareness.
