Tyson Fury has ended his long-term partnership with his trainer and will prepare for his next fight entirely on his own.
The two-time heavyweight champion won his world title in 2020 under Sugarhill Steward, after Ben Davison restored his fitness in 2018. For this comeback, Fury insists he does not need a head coach.
He compares himself to Clubber Lang from Rocky III, saying he will “train alone.” Fury has chosen Thailand for his camp, claiming the year-round sunshine benefits his mental health compared to the UK.
Fury meets Arslanbek Makhmudov in London
After months training and spending time with family in Thailand, Fury flew to London for his first face-off with Arslanbek Makhmudov. Hundreds of journalists attended the media day.
When asked about his training, Fury said he will not rely on a head coach after splitting with Steward.
“I’m like Clubber Lang,” he said during the Netflix broadcast at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “I’m going to train alone.”
Lennox Lewis noted Fury has vast experience from many camps, and Fury agreed.
Fury trusts his own expertise
“I know how to go 12 rounds and push myself when necessary,” Fury said. “I also know when to rest.”
He added that boxing often gets treated like rocket science, but success comes from training hard, eating well, and resting properly.
“For experienced fighters, reminders help with technique,” he explained. “But I know my own body best now.”
Fury insists his years in the sport give him the confidence to prepare independently and manage his comeback without guidance.
