Islam Makhachev has multiple options in the welterweight division, but one opponent emerges as the frontrunner. Since defeating Jack Della Maddalena to claim the UFC welterweight title late last year, Makhachev has stayed inactive while awaiting his next matchup. On the same card, several welterweight fighters delivered strong performances. Michael Morales, Carlos Prates, and Ian Machado Garry all believe they deserve a title shot, yet Makhachev and his team have other plans.
Manager reveals frontrunner for title shot
After his win over Della Maddalena, Makhachev shocked fans by expressing interest in facing Kamaru Usman next. Usman has gone 1-3 in his last four fights and has clearly declined in recent years. Despite that, and other deserving contenders, Makhachev’s team identifies Usman as the leading candidate for the next fight.
“They’re discussing the next fight, and Kamaru Usman is on the list of possible opponents,” Makhachev’s manager Rizvan Magomedov told Sport24. “If you ask us, we’d also like that fight because it is one of the biggest fights possible in the division. The final word is always with the organization. Islam is ready to defend. From a media perspective, a fight with Usman would be the most exciting and watchable for the public.”
Although Magomedov aims to build hype, many fans remain uninterested, seeing the matchup as mismatched. Still, Makhachev vs Usman appears likely, and Makhachev has already posted social media clips showing he has started training.
UFC faces matchmaking challenges
The UFC has increasingly favored popularity over merit in matchmaking, frustrating fans. Despite this, Morales and Machado Garry could meet in a number one contender fight. The winner would earn a guaranteed title shot against Makhachev.
The welterweight division now faces a mix of high-profile fights and deserving challengers. Fans may need to accept Usman as Makhachev’s next opponent while other contenders prepare for their chance at the championship.
