Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson’s highly anticipated exhibition now faces serious doubts as Mayweather appears to shift focus to a different bout.
The two boxing legends were scheduled to meet this year in a match that promised intrigue, danger, and global attention. Since December, updates from both camps have been scarce. Now, a new potential fight has emerged.
Mayweather’s post-retirement bouts and Tyson’s return
After retiring in 2017, Mayweather spent seven years engaging in exhibitions against MMA fighters, celebrities, and former sparring partners across the world. Tyson returned to professional boxing at 57, taking on Jake Paul in a record-breaking 2024 contest. Both men kept fans excited for a possible showdown.
Kickboxing star announces fight with Mayweather
Kickboxing legend Mike Zambidis now claims he will face Mayweather this summer. Fans doubted the Mayweather-Tyson fight after its announcement last year, especially with Tyson turning 60 and the pair’s last weigh-ins differing by nearly 68 pounds.
Zambidis released a fight poster showing June 27 as the date and The OAKA Arena in Athens, Greece, as the venue. The event carries the title ‘Battle of the Legends,’ with Zambidis posting on Instagram that “history is about to be made.” The poster links Mayweather Promotions with Front Row Fight Series, the same team behind his bouts with John Gotti III and Aaron Chalmers.
Neither Mayweather, his promotions team, nor Front Row Fight Series has confirmed the announcement.
Mayweather-Tyson showdown was set for next month
In December, Tyson told a Dublin audience that his fight with Mayweather would take place in Africa in March. He promised fans an unforgettable event that would break records and rank among boxing’s largest spectacles.
The fight was first announced by CSI Sports in September, with a tentative 2026 date and global broadcast plans. While Mayweather could theoretically take part in two fights within months, the schedule seems highly challenging.
In 2022, Mayweather fought twice in 50 days, knocking out MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura in Japan and stopping YouTuber Deji seven weeks later in Dubai. Still, combining Tyson and Zambidis on the same calendar appears unlikely.
