Chaos in the Ring Leaves Zerafa’s Boxing Future Hanging by a Thread

Fight ends in confusion and fury

Michael Zerafa’s highly anticipated clash with Nikita Tszyu in Brisbane descended into chaos on Friday night, with the bout abruptly stopped and ruled a no contest after an accidental head clash. Zerafa claimed he was unable to see out of his left eye, prompting ringside doctor Alan Saunders to halt the fight at the end of the second round. The decision sparked immediate outrage inside the arena, with furious fans throwing cups and cans as disbelief swept through the crowd.

Zerafa later said he suffered a shattered eye socket and retinal damage, posting a video on social media showing significant swelling and revealing he spent the night in hospital. Despite the visible injury, the sudden ending left many questioning how the contest unraveled so quickly.

Backlash from fighters and fans

The fallout was swift and brutal. Tszyu expressed disbelief, accusing Zerafa of quitting at the first sign of trouble. His older brother, former world champion Tim Tszyu, confronted Zerafa in the ring and later doubled down in interviews, calling the incident a “cowardly act” and comparing it to his own willingness to fight through severe injuries in past bouts.

Adding fuel to the fire, Zerafa’s cut man claimed the damage was minimal, sharing a photo of a lightly bloodied swab and describing the ending as deeply disappointing. Commentary teams labeled the scenes extraordinary, predicting the night would be remembered as one of the most controversial moments in Australian boxing.

A career on the brink

After the fight, an emotional Zerafa unleashed an eight-minute rant backstage, hinting that he may walk away from boxing altogether. He insisted he never quit and felt unfairly targeted throughout his career, but the damage to his reputation appears severe. Reports suggest he could face a lifetime ban, with his promotional contract also under threat.

No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose did little to hide his anger, describing the situation as raw and deeply frustrating after the time, money, and effort invested in the event. With governing bodies yet to make a final call, Zerafa’s future now hangs in the balance, overshadowed by a night that left the boxing world stunned and divided.
