Canelo Alvarez Sets Sights on September Showdown Despite Crawford Retirement

Moving forward after Crawford

Canelo Alvarez will continue his boxing career without the chance for a rematch against Terence Crawford, who retired earlier this year. The Mexican superstar lost his undisputed super middleweight title to Crawford last September, and while a revenge bout had been on his radar, Crawford’s decision to hang up the gloves ended those plans. Alvarez has firmly waved off retirement himself, signaling he’s ready for the next big challenge.

Saudi Arabia to host “Mexico Against the World”

The 12th of September has been confirmed as the date for Alvarez’s next fight, which will take place in Saudi Arabia. Announcing the news on social media, Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority and influential boxing promoter, described the event as Canelo Promotions’ first major card. Named “Mexico Against the World,” the fight will feature Canelo in the main event competing for a world title, alongside other fighters from his team facing global opponents.

Title opportunities remain wide open

With Crawford’s retirement, the super middleweight titles are now vacant, giving Alvarez multiple paths to reclaim championship gold. He is currently ranked highly across all four sanctioning bodies—number one with the WBO, WBA, and WBC, and third with the IBF. Contenders are already lined up for the vacant belts, including Hamzah Sheeraz, Christian Mbilli, Diego Pacheco, and Cuba’s Osleys Iglesias, while Alvarez bides his time for the right title opportunity. Further details about the main event and undercard are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
