Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has flown back to the UK following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends. The 36-year-old was a passenger in a Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary truck on a major Lagos expressway on Monday.

Loss of Close Friends

Joshua’s friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, were killed in the crash. Their funerals are scheduled to take place at a London mosque on Sunday. Joshua was hospitalized following the collision but was discharged on Wednesday, according to reports.

Legal Proceedings Underway

The driver of the SUV, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving at Sagamu Magistrates’ Court. He was granted bail of 5 million naira (£2,578) and will remain on bail pending fulfillment of the court’s conditions. The next hearing has been scheduled for 20 January.

Returning Home and Family Ties

Joshua, born in Watford, has family roots in Sagamu, Ogun state, near the site of the accident. He was traveling to visit relatives for New Year celebrations at the time of the crash. The boxer had been spending time in Nigeria following his recent victory over Jake Paul on 19 December, reflecting both family ties and his ongoing connection to the country.
