Islam Makhachev rules the UFC welterweight division after achieving two-division success in 2025. He defended his lightweight crown and captured the 170-pound title at UFC 322. In the main event, Makhachev dominated Jack Della Maddalena for five rounds, showcasing his striking and grappling mastery. His rise leaves fans and fighters wondering who will challenge him next.
A new challenge no longer looming
Makhachev has plenty of potential opponents in the welterweight division, but one unbeaten contender will not be among them. Rinat Fakhretdinov, a fellow Russian, recently faced disappointment after the UFC decided not to offer a new contract. This decision surprised fans, as Fakhretdinov had remained undefeated across seven UFC fights. His professional record stands at 24-1-1, including a 23-fight winning streak.
Fakhretdinov ended UFC Paris with a 54-second knockout of Andreas Gustafsson last September. Despite this performance, UFC officials did not re-sign him, sparking debate within the MMA community.
Makhachev explains what went wrong
In an interview with Ushatayka, Makhachev offered a blunt assessment of Fakhretdinov’s situation. He said the UFC prioritizes fighters who can sell fights and draw attention, not just win quietly. “Rinat would just go out there and win. The UFC doesn’t need guys who just beat everyone and stay quiet,” Makhachev said.
He advised fighters to learn English, market themselves, and connect with fans. “They love the show. You need to learn how to put on a show,” Makhachev added, highlighting the business side of MMA beyond skill inside the Octagon.
Fakhretdinov moves forward with new opportunities
Fakhretdinov quickly responded to the news, clarifying he had not been cut from UFC contract terms. He expressed optimism about his future and said he had already received offers outside the organization. “Nothing terrible happened and offers are pouring in with a very different pay,” Fakhretdinov told fans.
He remained proud of his UFC tenure and hinted at having unfinished business. “We fought with dignity there. Believe me, we have not said everything there,” he said. He also suggested that his presence in the UFC may have posed challenges for some people behind the scenes.
