Former UFC athlete Suman Mokhtarian has been shot dead in Sydney. The 33-year-old fighter lost his life in what police suspect was a gang-related attack.

Deadly Shooting In Riverstone

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday around 6 p.m. in Riverstone, New South Wales. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots as Mokhtarian took an evening walk. Shots were fired from a red Audi before the vehicle sped away. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and tried to revive him, but he died from gunshot wounds to his upper torso.

Police Launch Urgent Investigation

New South Wales police have begun a large-scale investigation. Detectives believe the shooting may have been targeted or linked to gang tensions in the area. Officers are now reviewing security footage and speaking to locals in hopes of tracking down the gunman.

Previous Attempt On His Life

Mokhtarian had already survived a previous attempt on his life earlier this year. In February 2024, a gunman dressed as a delivery worker allegedly tried to shoot him outside the Australian Top Team gym in Wentworthville. The attacker fired several rounds at close range while children’s classes were in session. Mokhtarian escaped unharmed, but the attack raised serious safety concerns.

Cancelled Event Over Security Fears

In April, police in New South Wales canceled the first Dark Matter Fighting Championship event, where Mokhtarian was scheduled to coach several fighters. Authorities reportedly feared the event could be targeted in another gang-related assault.

Rising Talent In The MMA World

Suman Mokhtarian gained recognition after appearing in Season 27 of The Ultimate Fighter as a member of Team Miocic in the featherweight division. Despite losing his opening fight to Ricky Steele by unanimous decision, he showed enough promise to earn a UFC contract.

His Career Inside The Octagon

Mokhtarian made his UFC debut in December 2018 at the Adelaide event, where he suffered a first-round knockout against Sodiq Yusuff. He returned a year later at UFC Busan to face SeungWoo Choi but lost by unanimous decision. That match became his final appearance in the sport.

A Fighter’s Legacy

Suman Mokhtarian ended his professional mixed martial arts career with eight wins and two losses. Six of his victories came by submission, reflecting his strong grappling skills. His death has shocked the Australian MMA community, leaving behind a legacy of determination and passion for the sport.
