Joey Essex’s boxing debut could face uncertainty after his opponent announced plans to challenge the result.
Essex, 35, made his professional debut last month at the latest Misfits event in Manchester.
He secured a points victory over Portuguese influencer Numeiro, overcoming standing counts in both the fourth and final rounds.
Opponent Challenges Decision
Numeiro, 27, whose real name is Joao Barbosa, revealed plans to appeal the fight’s outcome.
Barbosa told IFL TV he repeatedly received professional feedback suggesting Essex should not have won.
He described the result as unfair, claiming refereeing mistakes cost him the victory.
Barbosa said he consulted his team and decided to lodge an appeal to seek a fair decision.
He criticized Essex, noting “fear” and “weakness” in his opponent’s performance and lack of technical skill.
Barbosa added many predicted he could never lose to Essex, especially in the UK.
Future Matches and Essex’s Boxing Heritage
Barbosa emphasized he prioritizes a fair ruling over a rematch but would prefer a fight outside the UK.
Essex has yet to announce a second boxing opponent.
The TV star has deep boxing roots: his uncle, Tony Sims, trains Conor Benn and formerly Anthony Joshua.
Essex’s father, Donny, boxed as an amateur, and his grandfather fought in the navy.
His great-grandfather served as a boxing judge at the 1948 Olympic Games in England.
Tony Sims’ daughter, Demi, also debuted at Misfits 22, defeating Nadeshi Hopkins on points.
