Lerone Murphy stuns UFC with spinning elbow knockout
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight contender Lerone Murphy put himself in the spotlight with a spectacular knockout. He stopped UFC rookie Aaron Pico in the first round with a spinning elbow during the co-main event of UFC 319 on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Fans immediately added the finish to the conversation for ‘knockout of the year’.
During his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Murphy demanded a shot at the Featherweight title. “This sport is all about moments, and I just created one,” he said. “I took the fight on three weeks’ notice. I believed in myself and knew the opportunity was there. I’m next in line. Let’s go, Volkanovski.”
Volkanovski responds quickly to the challenge
Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski wasted no time responding to Murphy’s callout. On social media, he wrote: “See you in December, Lerone Murphy. Congrats.” UFC President Dana White also expressed interest in the potential matchup, stating, “I love it” when asked about Volkanovski accepting the challenge.
Title picture complicated by other contenders
The top-ranked Featherweight, Movsar Evolev, remains a factor in the division, but he recently pulled out of the fight against Pico. For now, a title shot for Evolev seems unlikely. Murphy, with a 17-0 record, shares the longest winning streak in the promotion alongside Evolev. His previous three wins came against Josh Emmett, Dan Ige, and Edson Barboza.
Fans weigh in on December showdown
Murphy’s rise and Volkanovski’s acceptance set the stage for a possible December title fight. MMA fans now debate whether the matchup delivers the excitement the Featherweight division needs. The sport’s next big moment may hinge on Murphy stepping up against the reigning champion.
